As we previously reported, beloved stoners Harold and Kumar are back on the road in the second sequel to the admittedly hilarious “Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle,” this time a christmas-themed threequel called “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.”
While their second outing, ‘Guantanamo Bay,’ often ran out of steam in pursuit of laughs (though again, all the Rob Corddry and Ed Helms scenes are total gold), we’re ready for another serving of the pothead duo.
New York Magazine’s Vulture (and thanks for the aces image) got their hands on the script and broke the news on what to expect in the third Christmas-themed outing and it sounds a bit generic, while still comical. Regulars Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg’s script tracks down Harold and Kumar ten years after the events of the second film. Now in their thirties, Harold is married and living the idyllic family life while Kumar lives in their old apartment and has just had his license suspended for smoking weed. More importantly, Harold is drug-free but all that’s about to change when Kumar drops by and burns down a special Christmas Tree — soon enough, the two are on the road to find a replacement.
John Cho and Kal Penn will obviously be reprising their roles and Neil Patrick Harris will make the necessary cameo despite being (spoiler!) shot and killed in the second film (like that really matters here). The Vulture review drops a few more details, including a chase sequence while the duo are under the influence of psychotropic eggnog and flee a giant snowman. Mostly though, the script is “another loosely glued-together batch of dick and weed jokes that should satisfy fans of 2004’s improbably great ‘H&K Go to White Castle’ and really delight anyone who liked 2008’s not-quite-as-funny sequel ‘H&K Escape From Guantanamo Bay.’ ” A bit lukewarm? Sure, but Cho and Penn have great chemistry together and may just make this Christmas special a memorable comedy outing.
And lets not forget, they’re debating about shooting the film in 3D too. Either way, filming looks like it will be underway this summer targeting a 2011 Xmas release. –Mark Zhuravsky
