‘Voyage Of Time’ Trailer: After 5 Years, Terrence Malick’s IMAX Doc Hits Streaming Courtesy Of MUBI

More than five years ago (man, this last five years really feels like two decades, huh?), Terrence Malick’s acclaimed documentary, “Voyage of Time,” was released in IMAX. Since then, outside of a re-release a year or so later, it’s been hard to find a way to enjoy Malick’s feature at your leisure. Well, that is until MUBI stepped up to land the exclusive streaming rights to the film and is set to release it later this month. Huzzah!

As seen in the new trailer for “Voyage of Time: An IMAX Documentary,” the Malick film is narrated by “Tree of Life” star Brad Pitt and tells the story of our world from the Big Bang all the way through to the present day and beyond. But perhaps more interesting than the actual film, which is pretty great in its own right, is the journey the film went from conception to release.

Originally conceived decades before its release, Malick took some of the ideas and turned them into “Tree of Life” and then would later craft two versions of “Voyage of Time.” The first one, narrated by Pitt, runs for 40 mins and was made for IMAX. Then, later, Malick crafted a feature-length version, narrated by Cate Blanchett, titled “Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey,” and that actually premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. Eventually, the shorter film hit IMAX and select theaters but never got a proper home release. The feature-length version has yet to get any sort of official release.

Thankfully, we now have a streamer like MUBI, who is willing to take one of these gems and share it with everyone. (Also, as an aside, MUBI is really great and features a curated selection of incredible arthouse features and programs and should be essential for our readers. It’s pretty great.)

“Voyage of Time: An IMAX Documentary” is set to arrive on MUBI on December 17. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Decades in the making, this journey of discovery is an immersive one-of-a-kind celebration of existence and the grand history of the cosmos, transporting audiences into a vast odyssey that spans the eons from the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world, and beyond.
