As evinced by three seasons of “Inside Amy Schumer,” comedian Amy Schumer is really subversively brilliant. The way she uses self-deprecation about her looks, weight, size, female form as a trenchant conversation into sexism, misogyny is really disarmingly funny and insightful. But maybe, if you’re like this writer, you yearn for a little bit more. Her skits are brilliant, the latest one in which she uses a parody of Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men” to discuss, once again of course, whether she is patently bangable or not is pretty funny stuff. But they’re practically over before they begin, the show’s pace is lightning fast and while her interviews are funny, sometimes we crave narrative (sometimes we’d prefer if she’d do a more “Louie” or “Broad City” format).
Well, she’s already made that leap thanks to the prodding of Judd Apatow who heard her on Howard Stern a few years ago, realized she was brilliant and coaxed her into writing a screenplay. The movie is “Trainwreck,” a comedy where she riffs on her imaginary/exaggerated stage character: one that maybe drinks too much and ends up in one too many strange beds. In the movie, Schumer plays the titular character, a working career girl in the publishing world, but every other aspect of her life is a hot mess. Her narrative changes however when she’s assigned to cover a sports doctor (played by Bill Hader), a man so genuinely sweet, nice and easygoing she soon is gripped by a debilitating fear: of falling in love.

The best Apatow movies are a mix of heart and raunchy humor and “Trainwreck” already killed it at SXSW when it premiered earlier this year (read our review), so it sounds like we might be in store for another contemporary classic. “Trainwreck” also co-stars Brie Larson, basketball star LeBron James, Colin Quinn, Tilda Swinton, Barkhad Abdi, Mike Birbiglia, Vanessa Bayer, John Cena, Ezra Miller, Method Man, Jim Norton and Norman Lloyd. “Trainwreck” lands in theaters on June 6th.
