Watch: David O. Russell Breaks Down A Scene From ‘American Hustle’ Plus 10-Minute Academy Talk With Cast

American Hustle David O. Russell Christian Bale

The best way to watch “American Hustle” is to go into the theater knowing as little as possible. David O. Russell’s film weaves in and out of the lives of these characters in such a way as it’s best to be introduced not knowing what will happen next. That said, if you have already seen the film or are just curious about Russell’s working process then you should enjoy watching these two clips. The first is a segment from the New York Times with David O. Russell narrating a scene between Amy Adams and Christian Bale’s characters. The second clip finds Russell doing a Q&A, alongside the main cast of “American Hustle,” as part of the “Academy Conversations” series.

Naturally, with the movie getting a wide release this Friday and the awards season approaching, that means the cast and crew of “American Hustle” will be doing extra press. For “Academy Conversations,” the cast goes into a bit more detail about the characters they play, what it’s like working with Russell, and whether or not they view the movie as a comedy. The latter point is especially rich considering the Hollywood Foreign Press has labeled the film as a comedy in their Golden Globes nominations. Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner both agree that the film’s comedic elements are due to those moments being based on reality as opposed to being played for laughs.

In, “David O. Russell Narrates a Scene,” the director discusses why this particular moment between Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Adams) is so important to the rest of the film. Irving, in the process of falling in love with Sydney, wants to reveal to her who he really is. It’s definitely an interesting clip and hopefully we will get more commentary from the director whenever “American Hustle” eventually comes out on Blu-ray.

Once again, “American Hustle” comes out nationwide this Friday. Be sure to check out the clips below along with a new TV spot.
