Quick, name a modern YA franchise that has succeeded since the “Twilight” juggernaut stormed into theaters and forced every scared-stiff, looking-over-their-shoulder studio exec to scramble for his/her own would-be moneymaking property? For every ‘Hunger Games,’ that has triumphed, there has been a “Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones,” (initially shuttered, but limping back for a sequel), “Beautiful Creatures” (dead on arrival), “The Host” (a laughable worst-of-year dud), “The Seventh Son” (delayed by more than two years) and the Weinstein Company‘s “Vampire Academy” looks as if it was concocted by Friedberg and Seltzer.
So where others have failed, “Divergent” hopes to thrive much like its successful antecedents. Does it have romance? Check. Vague sci-finess, but not too much sci-finess to make its budget cost-prohbitive? Check. An outsider edge that makes the protagonists unique and special like every millennial ever born? Check!
Here’s the official synopsis:
In a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.
Can “Divergent” make the grade? You’ll have to wait until this spring to find out, but the studio is feeling optimistic — in fact, they already have the sequel “Insurgent” slated to start production in May. Directed by Neil Burger, “Divergent” stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, Ansel Elgort, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Christian Madsen, Amy Newbold, Kate Winslet and arrives in theaters on March 21st.
