Watch: Gerard Butler Gets Wet In Trailer For ‘Chasing Mavericks’

nullSo are uplifting yet tragic surfing movies a thing now? Last year we got "Soul Surfer," the true story of a young woman who gets attacked by a shark while out on the water, loses an arm, finds God, and gets back on the board. And now, we're getting another wholesome slice of sadness in the form of "Chasing Mavericks," a movie that will make you feel good before dropping some heaviness on y'all.

The film stars Gerard Butler, Jonny Weston, Leven Rambin, Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer in the biopic of late surfer Jay Moriarty. The Santa Cruz native found his calling in the world of surfing at a young age and soon flourished with the guidance of local elder Rick “Frosty” Hesson (Butler). Moriarty (Weston) trained under a vigorous mental and physical program in preparation to surf Mavericks, a spot on the California coast where waves five stories tall would come in during the winter swells. He tragically passed away the day before his 23rd birthday in a free-diving accident in the Maldives. It's that latter part the trailer glosses over to favor Butler playing Dad to this wildcard surfer in a trailer that is as wholesome as you might expect from a Walden Media production.

Curtis Hanson directed the film with an assist from Michael Apted, who stepped in to complete the final fifteen days of shooting when Hanson had to go in for heart surgery. "Chasing Mavericks" on October 26th. [MTV]
