If “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” left you wanting for more broadly drawn, East-meets-West comedy (and if you’re too impatient to wait for the sequel that’s coming next year), not to worry. More elderly culture clash is coming with “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” with the first trailer dropping to reveal the sickly sweet center of this crudely made cinematic sauce.
Why all the food metaphors? Well, that’s because this movie tells the story of Madame Mallory (we love you Helen, but that accent is godawful), a French restaurateur running a Michelin-starred joint when her world is turned upside down by an Indian family who dare to open up the Maison Mumbai literally across the street (hence the title). Sparks and cutlery fly as Madame Mallory and Papa (Om Puri) battle it out, but it isn’t long before paneer and omelets bring everyone together. Basically, your Mom is gonna love this, especially since it has the double endorsements of Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg as producers.
Lasse Hallstrom directs this shlock (big surprise) and it opens on August 8th. Watch below.
