We’ve seen numerous iterations of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” but aside from comedies, there’s never really been an essential Frankenstein movie. And certainly many have tried in recent years. Guillermo del Toro has been trying to get a Frankenstein movie made for years; the studio behind “I, Frankenstein” laughably tried to make a modern action version of the story and failed miserably. But try, try again and all that.
The latest film stars James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe and it’s called “Victor Frankenstein.” Directed by Paul McGuigan (“Wicker Park”), and written by Max Landis (“Chronicle”), the new adaptation may be a more frankensteined version, pulling from several sources on top of the Shelly 1818 novel, including other movies, to create a new pastiche.
The new film is told through the eyes of Igor (Radcliffe), Dr. Frankenstein’s (McAvoy) assistant, and a human guinea pig who has to suffer through various experiments. It’s a toxic master and servant relationship. “Victor’s ego means that at times he thinks he’s superior to Igor,” McAvoy told EW this week. “Their relationship is close, loving, abusive, manipulative, and it turns on a dime.”
Co-starring former "Downton Abbey" star Jessica Brown Findlay, the new Frankenstein legend begins on November 25th.
