After the intimate dramas "Like Crazy" and "Breathe In," director Drake Doremus is really swinging for the fences thematically in his upcoming sci-fi love story "Equals," revealing to Buzzfeed last fall that it tackles some very big questions. "…That’s the question that we’re asking is: Why are we, and what are we doing here? What is the point of our lives? What makes our lives worth living? It’s really simple. I think the film answers that in a very simple and hopefully poetic way," he said.
Starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, the story takes place in a future where love has seemingly been eradicated, but when emotions spark between people, they are soon faced with decisions that will affect their lives and everything they’ve ever known. Here’s the official synopsis:
In this gripping and emotional sci-fi romance from acclaimed director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play Nia and Silas, two people who work together in a futuristic society known as “The Collective.” A seemingly utopian world, “The Collective” has ended crime and violence by genetically eliminating all human emotions. Despite this, Nia and Silas can’t help noticing a growing attraction between them, leading them to a forbidden relationship—at first tentative, but then exploding into a passionate romance. As suspicion begins to mount among their superiors, the couple will be forced to choose between going back to the safety of the lives they have always known, or risk it all to try and pull off a daring escape.
