Unless you won the lottery or something, you probably haven’t had as good a year as Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The directing team’s fourth film, “22 Jump Street,” hits theaters tomorrow having picked up the best reviews of any film of the summer so far, and it looks likely to perform equally well at the box office, having already grown from its predecessor on the international opening (the film tripled the original’s opening in the UK). But remarkably, it’s their second monster hit of the year so far: only four months ago, the duo also directed “The Lego Movie,” which went from unpromising cash-in to being the most exciting and innovative animated film since Pixar were consistently great.
The pair haven’t committed to their next project, but to tide us over, there’s a new snippet from the DVD and Blu-Ray of “The Lego Movie,” which hits imminently. A brief short/faux-trailer called ‘History Cops,” it brings grindhouse stylings to a fake cop movie that pairs up Michelangelo and Abraham Lincoln (Will Forte, reprising his role from both “The Lego Movie” and Lord and Miller’s cult show “Clone High“). Like the film from which is spins off, it’s pretty great, and seems like reason to pick up the home video release all on its own. Watch it below, courtesy of Comic Book Movie.
As for Lord and Miller, they recently spoke to Collider and confirmed that they have been offered superhero movies in the past, but say that they haven’t found a project that they’re enthused enough about to devote years of their life to, although they are “talking to people about things and there’s lots of things that are very intriguing for sure.” For now, they’re developing a drama called “The Reunion” that Miller would direct solo, and also have an adaptation of the great novel “Carter Beats The Devil” on the cards, suggesting they’re heading for more dramatic territory, but for now, these guys are the toast of the town, and expect them to top the list for almost every hot project going.
