Got a Tip?

Watch ‘The Bear’ Creator Bring That Manic Family Energy To A New Coca-Cola Short “Film”

Tonight, it’s expected that Christopher Storer and the various folks involved with his massive Hulu hit, “The Bear,” are expected to earn some awards at the Emmys. But in addition to that, it appears Storer is also debuting a new short “film” he worked on.

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first—what Storer is debuting is an ad for Coca-Cola, but outside of some very obvious product placement, it’s just another example of the filmmaker showcasing what he does best.

Everyone loves the “Fishes” episode from Season 2 of “The Bear,” right? It’s an episode that takes place during the holidays and shows the extreme manic state of Carmy’s homelife thanks to his family, particularly his mother (an absolutely unhinged and never-better Jamie Lee Curtis). That episode is a masterclass on building tension and making the audience feel insane amounts of anxiety. It’s wonderful, and perhaps the best episode of TV in all of 2023. So, it appears Storer decided to play off that with his new Coca-Cola ad, “New Guy.”

Sure, “New Guy” is only about three minutes long, and it doesn’t take advantage any sort of built-in emotions you have for the characters involved, like in “The Bear,” but the short is still really entertaining and shows that Storer is unmatched in how he presents the craziness of a family get-together. And what makes “New Guy” perhaps a more palatable watch for many is the fact that the story is entirely wholesome. There’s no impending dread like what is felt in “Fishes.” This is just a dude trying to fit in with his girlfriend’s family. It’s sweet and funny.

Overall, there are a lot worse ways to make an ad, and at least with “New Guy,” Christopher Storer is promoting a multi-billion-dollar corporation with a three-minute segment that is fun to watch. But yeah, I don’t know if it sold me on buying Coke products.
