Now freshly minted for the Cannes Film Festival, you can feel good about getting down and dirty with Sofia Coppola‘s “The Bling Ring.” Yes, it’s another movie about young girls trying to find themselves, only this time it isn’t the suburban facade, international existential malaise, the empty pomp of royal life or soul-sucking Hollywood life her protagonist must navigate — instead it’s celebrity culture. Someone has has got it, the kids in “The Bling Ring” want it.
Emma Watson leads the cast of mostly smaller names, in the based-on-a-true-story tale of a group of young hipsters who started stealing from homes of the stars. They made off in millions worth of goods, had a great time but got caught, ending that brief taste at the top. “I don’t make the kind of movies that lend themselves to wide releases,” Coppola recently told DGA Quarterly, but unless this movie opens with black Ferrarri circling an empty racetrack, we think she might be wrong on this one. Watson and co. partying like there’s no tomorrow? Yeah, we think this might interest an audience a bit bigger than the local arthouse.
