With each week bringing with it at least a half dozen more movies to theaters, and countless more on VOD, not to mention film festivals and more, it's tough for any to resonate and stay above the noise. But last year, after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways" was one I just couldn't shake. Flawed? Sure. But the emotion within wasn't paralleled by any other movie, and certainly the ambitious scope and brave material made it stand apart. Indeed, it landed on my Best Of 2012 list as it has already opened in Canada, but with the U.S. release on the horizon, a new trailer has arrived. And it's pretty great.
Not so much a presentation of the movie as a music video, this spot centers on one of the most visually stunning moments of the movie, a party sequence, and yes, that dolly shot entrance is great and even better on the big screen. We suppose it's a clever way to get around telling people there will be subtitles, but if you want some actual drama, there's a clip too. The movie centers on the titular character (played by Melvil Poupaud) who makes the decision to become a woman, and it has far-reaching consquences, no less than on his fiercely loyal girlfriend, played by Suzanne Clement. And one particularly searing moment is captured below.
"Laurence Anyways" opens in June. Watch below. (And the song in the trailer is "Fade To Grey" by Visage). [The Film Stage/Deadline]
