If you’re a fan of classic horror, you’re no doubt aware of author Shirley Jackson. The legendary writer of “The Haunting of Hill House” has seen a bit of a resurgence in fan-appreciation thanks to the 2018 adaptation of the same name. But now, another one of her stories is being brought to life, the creepy “We Have Always Live in the Castle.”
As seen in the new trailer for the film, which we saw at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, Alexandra Daddario, Taissa Farmiga, and Crispin Glover star as a family of strange folks that live in a very large estate outside of town. After the mysterious death of the patriarch, people around town fear that one of the family members is responsible and the trio are ostracized. That’s when a long-lost cousin comes to visit (played by Sebastian Stan), and the entire family unit is thrown into chaos.
“We Have Always Lived in the Castle” has been in development for a decade, but only recently gained traction when director Stacie Passon was hired to helm the film. She is probably best known for her TV work, with series like “Halt and Catch Fire,” “The Punisher,” “Transparent,” and “Billions” under her belt.
Now, after a premiere at last year’s LAFF, the atmospheric horror film is coming to VOD next month. You will be able to watch “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” when it is released on May 17.
Here’s the synopsis:
Merricat Blackwood lives on the family estate with her older sister Constance and their aging Uncle Julian. They are the last remaining members of the Blackwood family after a fatal dose of arsenic found its way into the sugar bowl one night. Sealed off from the curiosity and hostility of the villagers, their quiet isolation is disturbed by the arrival of their charming cousin Charles, putting Merricat on high alert.
