One of many awards announcements delayed by the unprecedented wildfires, the Producers Guild of America announced the always influential PGA Awards nominations on a Sunday. On the film side, Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures nominees include “Anora,” “A Complete Unknown,” “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Dune Part II,” “Emilia Perez,” “September 5,” and “Wicked.” Notable television nominees are “Hacks,” “The Penguin,” “True Detective: Night Country,” “Fallout,” and “Shōgun.”

The other nominees in the Theatrical nomination category included “A Real Pain” and “The Substance.” The surprising inclusion of “September 5” was concerning news for “Sing Sing,” “Challengers,” and “Nickel Boys,” three films all attempting to make the Oscars Best Picture 10. That being said, a word to the wise for those hoping that a PGA nomination guarantees an Oscar nomination, a word of warning. While all 10 PGA nominees lined up with the Oscar nominees for Best Picture last year, they historically have not lined up with the 10 nominees for Best Picture. In 2023, PGA nominees “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “The Whale” did not earn Best Picture nods. In 2022, “Being the Ricardos” and “Tick, Tick…BOOM!” did not make the Academy Awards cut. In 2021, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “One Night in Miami…” were PGA nominees only. 2020, the last year with a flexible number of Best Picture nominees, saw “Knives Out” only earn PGA recognition.
Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures nominees included “Inside Out 2,” “The Wild Robot,” “Flow,” “Moana 2,” and “Wallace & Gromit: A Vengeance Most Fowl.”
Among the television nominees, there were very few surprises with “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “Only Murders in the Building” cracking the Comedy Series category while “Bad Sisters,” “The Diplomat,” “Fallout,” “Shōgun,” and “Slow Horses” rounding out the Drama field. “Baby Reindeer,” “FEUD: Capote Vs. The Swans,” “The Penguin,” “Ripley,” and “True Detective: Night Agency” earned Limited or Anthology Series nominations.
This year’s ceremony will also feature posthumous tributes to Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein who will receive the 2025 Trailblazer Award. Taika Waititi will also be honored with the Normal Lear Award for excellence in television.
The 36th PGA Awards are currently scheduled for Saturday, January 8th.
