‘Wild Horse Nine’: Mark Ruffalo & Parker Posey Cast Alongside Sam Rockwell In Martin McDonagh’s Mysterious Next Film

British-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh made massive waves in previous awards seasons with dramatic comedies such as “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the latter earned nine nominations without a single win. The playwright-turned-filmmaker is now lining up his next feature effort, titled “Wild Horse Nine” which would see him reunite with Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell. McDonagh previously worked with the versatile actor on ‘Three Billboards’—that performance earned his Best Supporting Actor Oscar statue—and “Seven Psychopaths.”

Two other high-profile casting additions have been announced as Deadline reports: John Malkovich (“Opus,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“) and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things,” “Mickey 17“), with production set to begin next month in Rapa Nui, the indigenous name for Easter Island. Variety adds that Parker Posey (“Irrational Man“) has also joined the ensemble.

Disney’s Searchlight Pictures, who released both ‘Three Billboards’ and ‘Banshees,’ is reteaming with the filmmaker by distributing the film without the update mentioning a specific release date, with Blueprint Pictures and Film4 involved as well.

The report also briefly mentions that Christopher Walken (“Seven Psychopaths” and Oscar Isaac (“The Card Counter“) had been previously circling the project for undisclosed roles, but that isn’t the case anymore. That’s a shame, they would also be amazing additions.

Plot details are unknown, and the title doesn’t seem to give any hints, although the first thought, “Wild Horse Nine,” could be military lingo or coding. However, what is known is McDonaguh’s signature gallows humor which is highlighted throughout his career, and the cast assembled so far are known for their comedic chops.

Then again, with the news of the shoot taking place on Easter Island, it’s possible the location will play into the story similar to how ‘Banshees'”‘ filmed on location in a small Irish town posing as the fictional Inisherin. It’s just not exactly clear what that means until more information is shared by McDonagh and Searchlight. Stay tuned for updates when they reveal themselves.
