While “La La Land” didn’t win Best Picture as almost every awards season guru had predicted, with six Oscars under its belt (including Best Actress, Best Song, Best Score, and Best Director) and not to mention racking up over $415 million worldwide, filmmaker Damien Chazelle has nothing to be upset about. In fact, he’s one of the hottest moviemakers in the game right now. And next year, we’ll see a pair of pictures from the director.
The first one has already been announced, his reteam with Ryan Gosling on the astronaut drama “Last Man.” The other will be “The Claim,” a mystery thriller that Chazelle has written, but won’t be directing. The story will follow a single father with a criminal background who must uncover the whereabouts of his kidnapped daughter while fighting the mysterious claims of another couple who insist that the child is theirs. Interesting stuff.
When Chazelle first came to Hollywood he cut his teeth doing script work, and churning out genre fare, earning credits for “The Last Exorcism Part II” and “Grand Piano.” And you might also remember he has a credit on “10 Cloverfield Lane” as well. So we’re pretty interested to see what the next thriller offering from him might look like.
No word yet on who will direct or star in “The Claim,” but things are moving right along, and it’s slated to open in 2018, giving us a double dose of Chazelle in the year ahead.
