Hollywood is getting Biblical and Will Smith wants to get jiggy with this emerging trend. With Darren Aronofsky currently building his ark for "Noah," and with two different Moses movies in the works — one from Steven Spielberg and another from Ridley Scott — is seems the Old Testament is kind of totally hip at the moment. And now another famed story from the book of Genesis is being primed for the big screen.
Deadline reports that Overbrook Entertainment has set up the (tentatively titled) "The Redemption of Cain" over at Sony, for Smith to direct and likely star in as well. If somehow you missed Sunday School growing up, Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve, with Cain killing his brother after he grew jealous when God took Abel's offerings instead of his own. He was given a mark, warning others of God's vengeance that awaited those who commited murder, and he was forced to wander the Earth in punishment, with some fables adding that he wound up on the moon. But the Book Of Jubilee claims he later married his sister (gross), fathered a son Enoch, founded the first city and then died in the house he built when it collapsed on him. Either way, not a fun life for Cain.
This won't be Smith's next film, so who knows if or when it will ever happen (dude attaches himself a zillion projects, and he's also super selective). But his interest in the Bible isn't new. It was just over a year ago he was attached to "Joe," a modern take on the story of Job from the writers of "The Fighter," though no word on if that one is still brewing. So just put this on Big Willie's shelf for now, but it's an intriguing prospect nontheless for a guy whose only directing credit to date is an episode of "All Of Us."
