What are “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan’s thoughts on doing a third Batman film? Apparently they’re still up in the air, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t pressure. A recent WSJ article talking to Warner/D.C. film execs had Batman 3 roughly pencilled in for a 2011 date. Now an article from the Hollywood reporter titled “Anatomy of a Hit: The Dark Knight,” tracks the massive success of the film, one that the studios are obviously dying to repeat as soon as possible. They desperately want it to happen, but appear to be at the mercy of Nolan… for now.
“There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it,” one of “The Dark Knight” producer Chuck Roven said in the article. “But it’s really Chris’ call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn’t think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on.”
Apparently, Nolan is not even thinking about it and on a long-deserved vacation. “When he comes back, we will see how he feels.”
It also sounds like Nolan hasn’t even thought of an idea yet.
“Warners and Legendary are both interested in doing a third in the series, but all involved say it will be up to Nolan to come to them with a story and a plan.” Though to be fair Nolan has hinted in the past that he does have a vague notion for the third film, he just hasn’t been talking about what it actually is.
‘TDK’ fans creating their own silly villains await with bated breath. But has anyone considered what seems rather obvious already? WB will move forward with a Batman 3 movie regardless of Nolan is on board. Going fwd with Nolan is ideal, but too much is at stake financially for the studio to not give it a shot should he decide to move on to other things. Believe it.
