'The Witcher' Trailer: Henry Cavill Ditches The Superhero Cape To Chase Monsters

Hot off the heels of “The Witcher” novels and video games, especially the hugely successful third and final installment released in 2015, we now have a TV series adaptation coming our way, of course, courtesy through streaming behemoth Netflix. Its first trailer has just been unleashed, giving us an eye-full of Henry Cavill as lead witcher Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter whose quest is accompanied by Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) and sorcerer Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).

Here’s what we know about the story so far: Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

The series will also star Jodhi May as the Queen of Cintra, Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as her husband, knight Eist, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, leader of the magical academy at Aretuza, and her novice sorcerers Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) and Sabrina (Therica Wilson-Read).

Based on the Polish fantasy novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of this widely acclaimed and popular fantasy series will also keep a check on this series, working as a Creative Consultant to make sure this adaptation is at its best. He’ll be overseeing this series with its creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who has also pitched in with writing for the episodes.

The first episode, as well as three others, are directed by Alik Sakharov (“House of Cards,” “Game of Thrones”), and Alex Garcia Lopez (“Marvel’s Luke Cage,” “Utopia”) & Charlotte Brändström (“Outlander,” “Counterpart”) have directed two other episodes each.

Here’s to a fantasy epic to fill the hole that “Game of Thrones” has now left (let’s hope this one ends up having a better final season).

“The Witcher” will premiere on Netflix on December 20.
