First, the boys talk “Wonder Woman 1984” and the recent news the film is heading to theaters and HBO Max on Christmas Day. This isn’t just news that should appeal to fans of the franchise, who are eagerly anticipating the film’s holiday release, but also a scary day for the future of the theatrical experience as this decision by Warner Bros. really feels like it could have devastating effects on the exhibition industry. Plus, we ask the age-old question, “Has Brian subscribed to HBO Max yet?” The answer might surprise you. (Or not, because honestly, it doesn’t matter.)

Next, the discussion turns to “Sound of Metal” and “The Nest.” Both of which are fine movies with serious awards aspirations. “Sound of Metal” is arriving in select theaters this weekend and stars Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer that suddenly (and permanently) loses his hearing. It’s a brutal drama that features one of the best performances all year.

Finally, Sean Durkin joins the podcast to talk “The Nest,” which is now available on VOD and Blu-ray. The director explains his inspiration for the film, the long process of bringing it to life, and why it’s taken nearly a decade for him to release a film after the success of “Marcy Martha May Marlene.”

“It’s been tough,” explained Durkin about his long time between films. “It’s been lots of ups and downs…A variety of projects–a couple at studios, a couple not and some TV stuff–and all of it fell through for different reasons and I was kinda writing ‘The Nest’ alongside all of it.”

He also went into detail about picking Carrie Coon and Jude Law for the lead roles in his gripping family drama.

“I got the script to him,” said Durkin about landing Law for the film. “My concern was this character does a lot of questionable things…and I wanted to make sure that whoever is playing Rory had a real love underneath the surface, a real warmth, and that he truly believes he’s doing the best thing for his family, even though it’s not the best thing for his family. And Jude wanted the same thing.”

You can listen to Durkin talk about that and more in the full interview in the podcast below.
