While the talk of Marvel‘s time on stage Friday night in Anaheim at the D23 Expo mainly centered around its new show announcements – “Ms. Marvel,” “Moon Knight,” and “She-Hulk” – the audience was treated to a bit more insight into “What If…?,” “Loki,” “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” and “WandaVision.” President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, showed a clip from Marvel Studios’ first venture into animation with “What If…?” and the studio chief promised that for every Marvel movie released so far, there would be one counterpart episode of “What If…?.” He said he series would capture everything audiences get from the Marvel movies but in animated form and the clip that followed delivered on that promise.

Inspired by the animation of “Star Wars: Resistance,” the clip showed footage of what would happen if Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) was given the Super Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. The result: Captain Britain. Sebastian Stan‘s Winter Soldier is seen fighting on a train against a zombie version of Captain America, Star-Lord attempts to steal the Power Stone from Morag at the beginning of “Guardians of the Galaxy, “only instead of Peter Quill, it’s T’Challa, and lastly, we see skinny Steve Rogers piloting what looks like a WWII, steampunk version of the Iron Man armor. It’s bold, wacky, and ever creative and the best part is, all of your favorite MCU actors and actresses will be reprising their roles in the series. “What If…?” arrives on Disney Plus in 2021.

Following “What If…?” was none other than the God of Mischief himself “Loki.” Feige invited director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldren to discuss the series. Fans can expect six, one-hour episodes that follow Loki post “Avengers: Endgame” uncovering where exactly he went, if he can make a friend, and will the sun will shine on him again. If any of these hints sound familiar, it’s because the show appears to be drawing inspiration from the comic line “Loki: Agent of Asgard.” In that comic, Loki is sent on a path of redemption from the All-Mother to Midgard (Earth) to collect five keys Odin forged for him, should he be worthy. During his time on Midgard, he befriends a human named Verity Willis who just so happens always to know when she’s being lied to forcing Loki to be honest with her. While there’s no confirmation that this is indeed serving as inspiration for the series, one can only assume some pieces will be taken from it. “Loki” hits Disney Plus in 2021.

The last piece audiences got a look at was “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” Stars Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie took the stage with energy and style as director Kari Skogland brought out the cast. Feige teased the return of Daniel Bruhl‘s Zemo and revealed the return of Emily Van Camp‘s Sharon Carter. As if that wasn’t enough, Wyatt Russell was brought out and revealed to be playing John Walker aka U.S. Agent. The head writer of the show Malcolm Spellman, is known for “Empire,” and says in the clip below, Marvel said these Disney+ series should not be all action and should be both an opportunity to get a see these characters interact on a personal level and for the actors to shine which is exciting. “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” swoop onto Disney Plus next year.
Finally, in the world of “WandaVision,” the Vision and Scarlet Witch series starring Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, which you can read more about here, it was revealed that Matt Shakman (“Fargo” and “Game Of Thrones“) would direct the series and the head writer would be Jac Schaeffer who has already worked with Marvel and wrote “Black Widow.” The show is scheduled for spring 2021.
