Rejoice, dads everywhere! Cable’s #1 show (somehow) is getting the prequel show fans have been asking for, as Paramount just announced a massive new deal with “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan to create multiple series with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment, the first of which being “Y: 1883.”
Sheridan began his career as an actor, with recurring roles in such TV shows like “Walker, Texas Ranger” and “Sons of Anarchy,” before making the jump to screenwriting. In recent years, Sheridan’s made a big name for himself with a pretty phenomenal screenwriting run. After writing “Sicario,” Sheridan gave us the one-two punch of “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River.” Excusing an unfortunate detour with “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” Sheridan has been pretty busy co-creating, directing, and writing the incredibly successful “Yellowstone.”
“Yellowstone” has been a monster hit for both Sheridan and Paramount, having been recently renewed for a fourth season, as ViacomCBS is likely looking to expand its Paramount+ offering beyond more “Star Trek” spin-offs. The show stars Kevin Costner as the patriarch of a powerful family of ranchers trying to keep a hold of his land in a world of corrupt politicians, oil barons, and emerging national parks.
Now, the franchise will go back in time to 1883 in the upcoming prequel that will show the Dutton family “as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana.”

“I am excited to continue the story of Yellowstone and thank you to Chris, Keith and David for allowing me to keep on expanding the family for the fans,” said Sheridan in a statement.
The show, which will stream on Paramount+, will be executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari. This is the first project to come out of Sheridan’s new multi-platform, multi-year deal with ViacomCBS. It’s time to saddle up, cowboy.
