Zach Galifianakis Is Humpty Dumpty In 'Puss in Boots'; Michael Fassbender Leads 'A Single Shot'

— We took “The Hangover” breakout star Zach Galifianakis to task yesterday for signing on to a ton of rather generic sounding comedies, and a commenter quite rightly pointed out he’s made some interesting choices too, like the upcoming Ryan Fleck/Anna Boden project “It’s Kind of A Funny Story.” Well, the prosecution would like to present Exhibit D: the hirsute comic may voice the role of Humpty Dumpty in the “Shrek” prequel/spin off “Puss in Boots.” Galifianakis will join Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in the cast of the movie, which will open exactly two years from now. The Shrek franchise has been creatively bankrupt since about two-thirds of the way through the first movie, so we have no hopes for this one.

— Notification: David Fincher added ten photos to the album “The Social Network.” The thrilling pictures from the set of the Facebook movie at John Hopkins show stars Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield battling ninjas on the roof of a speeding train.

— Andy Garcia’s pathological obsession cinematic love affair with his birthplace, Cuba, continues, with the news that he’ll direct and co-star in “Hemingway and Fuentes,” about the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and his best friend Gregorio Fuentes, and the writer’s time in Cuba, when he fell in love with the Italian girl who inspired “The Old Man and the Sea.” Didn’t Garcia already direct a movie like this that we never bothered to see or just does it sound all too familiar? Anthony Hopkins, who’s long been attached to various Hemingway biopics, will take on the great man, and Annette Bening will play the writer’s wife. So, already, it’s likely to be a million times better than Chris O’Donnell’s portrayal of the author in “In Love and War,” one of the most spectacular pieces of miscasting of all time.

— David Jacobson, helmer of the under-rated Edward Norton movie “Down in the Valley,” has lined up a new movie. He’ll begin filming “A Single Shot” in Ontario in January, starring Michael Fassbender (“Hunger”) as a poacher whose family is threatened by gangsters. Forest Whitaker, William H Macy and Thomas Haden Church make up the rest of the frankly, deeply exciting cast. We’re convinced that Fassbender is going to go stratospheric in the next few years, so it’s good to see him taking on a big leading role like this.
