Got a Tip?

Zack Snyder Would Only Return To Superhero Films For Very Specific ‘Batman’ & ‘Elektra’ Stories

Though it’s clear that Zack Snyder’s filmmaking interests, as of late, have brought him to the stars for his “Rebel Moon” franchise, the man really did generate a cult-like following thanks to his DC superhero films. In fact, to this day, there is still a legion of devotees posting on social media, begging Warner Bros. to fire James Gunn and bring back Snyder to finish his ‘Justice League’ story. But when asked about the chances of returning to superhero filmmaking, Snyder seems generally disinterested. That is, unless he’s given the chance to tell two very specific stories.

Speaking in a long profile for THR, Zack Snyder was asked the inevitable question—would he return to the world of superheroes for a future film? Well, the short answer is clearly no, as he is fully immersed in the world of “Rebel Moon” for the foreseeable future. (Hopefully… if the two-part first film is a huge success on Netflix.) But there are two comic book stories that he holds near and dear that would be intriguing if offered.

Over on the DC side of things, this should be of no surprise—Snyder wants to make a “Dark Knight Returns” film. That said, he’d only be interested if it’s “a true representation of the graphic novel.” For those unaware, ‘Returns’ is a classic Frank Miller story that sees an older Batman come out of retirement to save his city one last time. Upon its release, it really did usher in a new era of Batman stories, with a much darker, grittier take on the hero. Interestingly, much of the way “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” portrayed Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, is heavily inspired by ‘Returns.’

But he also has a Marvel story in mind too. And surprise, surprise, it’s another Frank Miller story. Snyder would love to adapt “Elektra Lives Again,” which is a spinoff of the “Daredevil” mythos and focuses on the character of Elektra, as the title suggests. Obviously, Marvel Studios has its own plans for the “Daredevil” franchise, so it’s unclear if there’s even going to be a reintroduction of Elektra in the future. That said, if Marvel wants it to happen, perhaps they can call Snyder.

Now, before you ask, there’s no “Star Wars” film that Snyder has in mind. When asked about that, the filmmaker said, “Those guys have a handle on the brand.” Plus, as we already know, “Rebel Moon” started as his pitch for a new ‘Star Wars’ film. So, he’s already getting that chance.

“Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire” is set to debut on Netflix on December 22.
