For quite some time, Hollywood has been hungry for a Janis Joplin biopic starring Amy Adams. Fernando Meirelles (“City Of God,” “The Constant Gardener“) and Lee Daniels (“Precious,” “The Butler“) were attached at various points, and then two years ago, Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Wild“) signed on the dotted line to direct the project. Well, given that we’ve heard pretty much nothing since, perhaps it’s not a surprise that the project is dead.
Chatting with Collider, Vallée confirmed that his next project is the limited-series adaptation of “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn‘s “Sharp Objects” starring Adams, and in the process, revealed the Joplin movie is no more.

“We’re starting very soon. I committed to that before [HBO limited series] ‘Big Little Lies.’ I was working with Amy Adams on the Janis [Joplin] project that we’re finally not doing, and she invited me to play in her new sandbox, doing a TV series. And then, Reese [Witherspoon] came and said, ‘I want you to come do this first, since that’s not ready.’ I said to Reese, ‘Okay, I’ll do Episodes 1 and 2 because I won’t have time [to do more]. I have to do ‘Sharp Objects.’ And then, here we are,” he explained.
“Sharp Objects” will follow a reporter who returns to her hometown to cover the killings of two young girls, and in the process faces her own demons. Promising stuff certainly, but unfortunately we’re not going to see Adams rock ‘n’ roll, which is a bit of bummer.
