The Creepy Nun From 'The Conjuring 2' Is Getting A Spinoff Movie

Last weekend, “The Conjuring 2” opened….fine….earning just under the debut numbers of the first movie. Generally speaking, studios want sequels to make more money than their predecessors, but given the way this summer is going with one underperforming movie after another, Warner Bros. seems to be happy enough with “The Conjuring 2” that, while they haven’t said yes to a third installment, they are entertaining the notion of a spinoff. And no, it’s for the character you think it is.

While the (terribly CGI-ed) The Crooked Man might’ve seemed the obvious creepy character to get its own movie, like “Annabelle” from “The Conjuring,” it’s actually that creepy nun that haunts the mind of Vera Farmiga‘s character that will get a standalone flick. What’s interesting, is that the character was a super last minute addition, with THR revealing that director James Wan initially shot the movie with a demonic figure with horns instead. But in March, there were reshoots where it was tweaked to the demonic nun character, and it seems like that late bit of inspiration might be a lucrative one.

Wan will co-produce the spinoff, that will be penned by “The Conjuring 2” co-writer David Leslie Johnson. No director has been named, but I’d imagine WB is hoping to duplicate the success of “Annabelle” by keeping the budget down, and crossing their fingers for something in the neighborhood of the $256 million worldwide haul that film took in.
