Felicity Jones Addresses 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Reshoot Rumors

It’s just over two months until the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and yet, Lucasfilm and Disney still can’t quite shake the stain of reshoot rumors that exploded this summer. One version of the story went that the first “Star Wars” spinoff film was being seriously retooled after executives at the mouse house balked at director Gareth Edwards‘ gritty vision for the movie, which will detail how the Rebellion stole the plans for the Death Star. The other version of the story is that the weeks’ worth of additional shooting this summer was nothing more than your standard pickups that every blockbuster usually has as part of their production schedule. And it’s this latter story that Lucasfilm exec Kathleen Kennedy is sticking to.

“I’m sure if you picked up the phone and called every single large, technical movie and said, ‘You ever gone in and done reshoots?’ they’d all say, ‘Oh God, yes,’ ” she told THR. “So why has it turned into a big story? Because it’s ‘Star Wars,’ and they put a spotlight and scrutinize every single thing that gets done. But it was always planned and nothing unusual.”

Fair point to Kennedy, but I’d wager that even she would acknowledge that hiring two additional directors — Tony Gilroy (who also did new rewrites) and Simon Crane — is not standard procedure, and that an additional schedule that stretched out weeks (when usually pick-ups and reshoots are knocked out as quickly as possible) isn’t par for the course.

However, according to the film’s star Felicity Jones, everything was done in making the best movie possible.

“Obviously when you come to the edit, you see the film come together and you think, ‘Actually, we could do this better, and this would make more sense if we did this,’ ” the actress said. “I’ve done it so many times. I mean, you wouldn’t just give your first draft on this story, would you?”

And again, fair point. We’ll see the results of all the tinkering and patching together when ‘Rogue One’ opens on December 16th.
