Paramount+ is doubling down on “MobLand”, and perhaps more significantly, Tom Hardy is officially staying put. The streamer has renewed the hit crime drama for a third season, with Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren all confirmed to return following months of behind-the-scenes drama that at one point appeared likely to end Hardy’s run on the series.
The announcement puts an official end to one of the stranger TV industry sagas of the year. Back in May, reports claimed Hardy had been fired from “MobLand” following clashes with co-creator Jez Butterworth and producer David Glasser, along with allegations of chronic tardiness and difficult behavior on the Season 2 set. One report alleged Hardy kept Brosnan, Mirren, and crew waiting for hours while refusing to leave his trailer. The situation quickly became murkier: subsequent reporting said Hardy had not actually been fired, Mirren publicly offered her co-star support, and by June, Hardy was reportedly set to return if Paramount+ ordered a third season. Now that return—and Season 3 itself—is official.
The early renewal comes just over two weeks before Season 2 premieres September 18. Hardy will return as Harry Da Souza, the Harrigan family’s formidable fixer, while Brosnan and Mirren will reprise their roles as crime-family patriarch and matriarch Conrad and Maeve Harrigan.
Season 2 finds the Harrigans attempting to present a united front as new rivals threaten their increasingly fractured criminal empire. Harry, meanwhile, finds himself caught between escalating tensions within the family as violence spreads and alliances begin to collapse.
Along with Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren, Season 2 stars Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Anson Boon, Mandeep Dhillon, Jasmine Jobson, Teddie Allen, Emmett J. Scanlan, Johnny Flynn, Ophelia Lovibond, Janet McTeer, and Toby Jones.
Created by Ronan Bennett, “MobLand” began life as a spinoff of “Ray Donovan” before evolving into its own standalone crime saga. Guy Ritchie directed episodes of the first season and remains an executive producer alongside Jez Butterworth, Hardy, David C. Glasser, Ivan Atkinson, Dean Baker, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, and Keith Cox.
Paramount+ has yet to announce when production on Season 3 will begin or when the new season is expected to premiere.
Produced in association with Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, the ten-episode second season of “MobLand” will premiere Friday, September 18 on Paramount+, with new episodes arriving weekly through the November 20 finale.
