Well, Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon” (here’s our review) has certainly grabbed the narrative out of Cannes this week. The hotly anticipated movie was booed at the Croisette, aggressively in some cases, with audience members yelling at the screen, but the director typically shrugged off the jeers and even took time to take swipes at fellow Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier (they’ve traded jabs for years now).
Clips from the film have been revealed, and along with several new posters and photos, Amazon Studios and Broad Green Pictures (the theatrical distributor) have gone all out to make sure audiences have heard and noticed “The Neon Demon.” Now Milan Records is getting into the action and they’ve unveiled the first score cut from Cliff Martinez’s soundtrack.
Titled “Neon Demon,” it’s the movie’s main theme, and the track is something of a slight gear shift for Martinez, who has previously worked with Refn on “Drive” and “Only God Forgives.” Sure, there’s a moody-ish techno-ish pulse to it, but it’s less haunting and contains more of a shiny, lipsticky sheen that’s not out of character with the movie’s tone, like a dark disco mood. And given that “The Neon Demon” has giallo traces to it, the twinkling qualities of the music also give off vague allusions to Goblin, the band that scored “Suspiria.”
The soundtrack to “The Neon Demon” comes out June 24th (2xLP on July 1st) via Milan Records. Listen to the soundtrack cut above in the main image or below.
