Matt Reeves Says 'The Batman' Is "A Standalone"

While Film Twitter remains shaken up about Warner Bros. and DC Films‘ plan to make a Joker origin story movie, that will just be one of a string of spinoff that won’t connect to the mainline cinematic universe, it seems this plan has been in the works for a while now. Director Matt Reeves, in an interview from last month on KCRW that’s only making the rounds now, reveals that his upcoming “The Batman” won’t be cinematically canon either (or whatever).

“Well, I have a vision for a way to do something with that character that feels like it resonates with me personally, and a perspective that can grow out into other things. When they [Warner Bros.] approached me, what they said was ‘Look, it’s a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe,’ ” he explained.

Given the rumors that Ben Affleck is going to hang up the cowl after “Justice League,”  that the script is being rewritten from scratch, and that Reeves didn’t immediately jump on board “The Batman” in the first place, it all kind of adds up. If Affleck is indeed bouncing out of the DCEU, it makes total sense to reboot the character, but outside the main series, particularly if Reeves has a way to turn that into a trilogy. If WB and DC can get another “The Dark Knight” series, even if it means keeping Batman out of the DCEU, I’d assume they’ll leap at the opportunity.  And perhaps the ability to do that was the tipping point that convinced Reeves to sign on.

Lots to discuss to take it to the comments section, and listen to Reeves’ interview below. [The Wrap]
