Rooney Mara Says She's "Not Holding Out Hope Any More" For A 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequel

It’s been five years since David Fincher released “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and Sony hasn’t been in a particular hurry to make a sequel. The film was expensive to make, and the studio and director clashed throughout the production, and while the box office returns were respectable, it wasn’t the smash hit Sony was hoping for. Thus, the return of Lisbeth Salander became a question mark. Certainly for star Rooney Mara, she’s gone back and forth on the possibility of ever playing the part again, saying in February 2015 that a followup film was probably dead. However, by the fall of that year, even though was reported that Sony was developing “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” with a script by Steven Knight (“Locke,” “Burnt,” “Eastern Promises“) and plans to recast all the roles, Mara declared that she was still Lisbeth Salander until she heard otherwise. However, it seems that feeling is waning.

Chatting with Screen Daily, the actress was once again asked about a possible ‘Dragon Tattoo’ sequel, and while Mara will never say never, she doesn’t expect her phone to ring anytime soon.

“Yes, I’m still open to it but I’m not holding out hope any more,” she said.

It’s not entirely surprising news, but still nonetheless a bit of a bummer. Whatever your feelings on Fincher’s ‘Dragon Tattoo,’ Mara was great in the role, which earned the actress her first Academy Award nomination. But it seems whatever the future has in store for Lisbeth Salander at Sony, Mara won’t be part of it.
