‘This Blue Is Mine’: Zazie Beetz & Elizabeth Debick To Star In New Psychosexual Sci-Fi Drama

With the Cannes Film Festival right around the corner, the Cannes film market is really heating up this week, with dozens of new projects up for grabs. One of the most exciting projects coming together from HanWay Films is “This “Blue Is Mine,” a new psychosexual thriller starring “Atlanta” and “Deadpool 2” star Zazie Beetz and Elizabeth Debicki from “The Crown” and “The Guardians of The Galaxy” franchise.

The film will be the debut English-language film of Brazilian director Iuli Gerbase. Her feature debut, the Brazilian science fiction thriller “The Pink Cloud,” had its premiere at Sundance 2021. While it was thought to be a commentary on COVID-19, the film is about a mysterious pink cloud that appears across the globe, forcing everyone to stay home; the prescient movie was written in 2017 and shot in 2019. Gerbase also has six short films under her belt that she wrote and directed, and she has won many awards at various film festivals around the world.

Scheduled to begin production in August in Colombia, “This “Blue Is Mine” is set amidst a family holiday at a tropical resort, where a guilt-free bon viveur surprises everyone by bringing home his new beautiful and enigmatic girlfriend (Debicki). Her arrival and her odd behavior throw the already delicate dynamics off balance with the man and his daughters.

To get further into the synopsis given to Variety is to get into spoilers. But Beetz plays another woman still recovering from the trauma of a recent miscarriage, and there’s a huge genre twist—or is there??— wherein the aspiring trophy wife/new girlfriend, played by Debicki, tries to seduce Beetz’s character, making her question her reality and whether or not she’s having a mental breakdown.

The film looks like it will be looking to cast two major parts alongside Beetz and Debicki, including the male lead and an overbearing sister to the “Atlanta” star’s character.

The full synopsis is below, but note that it’s filled with big spoiler twists, so read at your own peril.

“This Blue Is Mine” is set amidst a family holiday at a tropical resort, where Arthur, a guilt-free bon viveur, surprises everyone by bringing his new beautiful and enigmatic girlfriend, Ivy (Debicki). Ivy’s arrival and her odd behavior throw the already delicate dynamics off balance with Arthur and his daughters. Connie (Beetz) is still recovering from the trauma of a recent miscarriage and her older half-sister Laura can be a bit suffocating in her efforts to support her. One evening, after Connie gets very drunk, Ivy quietly reveals to her that she’s actually an alien visiting Earth. While Laura is quick to write Ivy off as an aspiring trophy wife, Ivy’s strangeness makes Connie, and with her the audience, question if she could actually be an alien. Before she knows it, Connie is being seduced by Ivy and invited to follow her back to her planet, an invitation that sounds more seductive as the family drama heightens. But is Ivy really an alien? Or is Connie having a mental breakdown? Connie may have to take a leap of faith.

The project is being produced by Kamala Films, which is currently in production on an adaptation of Denis Johnson’s Pulitzer finalist novella “Train Dreams,” directed by Cline Bentley (“Jockey”) with Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones in the leads.

Zazie Beetz will be seen next in Todd Phillips’Joker: Folie à Deux,” and has “The Dutchman” on deck opposite André Holland and Kate Mara. Debicki will co-star in this summer A24’s horror thriller “MaXXXine” starring Mia Goth from filmmaker Ti West. Check out the trailer for “The Pink Cloud” in the interim.
