You didn’t really think it was all going to end with “Star Wars: Episode 9,” did you? Lucasfilm is a huge cornerstone of Disney‘s movie foundation, and with theme park attractions, virtual reality games, and so much more driving the money engine behind the property, there is no way the “Star Wars” saga is going to end anytime soon. As you might’ve guessed, plenty more movies are on the way.
Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy rolled by “The Star Wars Show,” for their usual puff piece, promo interview (before you ask, yes they touched up “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and nope, there was no mention of Phil Lord or Chris Miller). And during the conversation, Kennedy revealed that the story group at Lucasfilm are already looking well into the future.

“We’re sitting down now and talking about the next ten years of ‘Star Wars’ stories, and we’re looking at narratively where that might go. Future stories beyond ‘Episode 9’ with these new characters — Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8 — but we’re also looking at working with people who are interested in coming into the ‘Star Wars’ world, and taking us to places we haven’t been yet,” she said. “And that’s exciting too, because it’s a vast galaxy, far, far away. The possibilities are endless.”
It’s a bit ironic to hear about how the possibilities are endless when the stories so far in the main saga are tying directly to the original trilogy, while the spinoffs have gone the prequel/origin story route. And I say this as a big fan of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (though as someone who is not a fan of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“). I really want them to jump into bold, new, entirely originally stories.
At any rate, the future does hopefully bring with it more chances to truly break out of the box. But with the property literally worth billions of dollars, and feeding a larger IP machine, it’ll be interesting to see how much risk-tasking Lucasfilm actually considers.
