Pop open the bubbly: the month of September is not only the conclusion of Emmys season, but is also the traditional start of the new television season for broadcast and cable (although that is no longer really the case). Despite the rise of the flexible, year-long release calendar, September still represents the tantalizing promise of a clean slate and new faves, while attracting plum premieres. “Narcos”
Synopsis: Now that the bloody hunt for Pablo Escobar has ended, the DEA turns its attention to the richest drug trafficking organization in the world: the Cali Cartel. Led by four powerful godfathers, this cartel operates much differently than Escobar’s, preferring to bribe government officials and keep its violent actions out of the headlines.
What You Need To Know: While we have now reached the point in the narrative where Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) has been killed, Netflix’s cartel drama is by no means over. The third season follows the rise of the Cali Cartel, led by Gilberto Orejuela (Damian Alcazar), who becomes the top dog of the drug trade. The king(pin) is dead; long live the (king)pin.

“You’re the Worst”
Synopsis: Two self-destructive, toxic Los Angeles inhabitants fall in love and attempt to have a relationship.
What You Need To Know: What happens when flawed, toxic people attempt to get their shit in order? A whole lot of messy collateral damage. Viewers where shocked when Jimmy (Chris Geere) proposed to Gretchen (Aya Cash), then immediately turned tail. It will be interesting to see whether the FXX’s most cynical and awful lovebirds will patch things up or go subatomic.

“BoJack Horseman”
Synopsis: Okay, so this season is full of all the things people love about their favorite depressed talking horse. First of all, you’ve got BoJack himself, who is up to his old tricks. Then you have Princess Carolyn, who is one cool cat. While Princess Carolyn toys with the idea of starting a family, BoJack has family issues of his own. This season, on BoJack Horseman. Meanwhile, Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter have family issues of their own. You might say their marriage is “in a pit,” if you know what I mean (which you won’t, until you watch the season). Meanwhile Todd has issues of his own — as he explores his own evolving sexual identity and also in some episodes doesn’t do that. Oh! And Mr. Peanutbutter’s running for governor now; I forgot to mention that, that’s important.
What You Need To Know: Who would have thought an animated show about a has-been television actor, who is also an anthropomorphic horse, would become one of the most nuanced depictions of mental illness? After finding an unlikely glimmer of hope in the third season finale, Bojack (Will Arnett) appears to have had a breakthrough and is looking to get back on track, although it remains to be seen as to whether he will succeed.
