15 Films To Watch In October: ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon,’ ‘Exorcist,’ ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ & More

Butcher’s Crossing
Filmmaker Gabe Polsky‘s epic frontier adventure, “Butcher’s Crossing,” dares to try and be a commentary on human nature, ambition, masculinity, and man’s relationship to his natural environment, all in one. And with Nicolas Cage in the starring role, enough said, right? Rachel Keller, Jeremy Bobb, and Fred Hechinger co-star.
Release Date: In select theaters, October 20 via Sony Pictures.

Nyad
Annette Benning stars in the biographical sports drama “Nyad” from directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. Benning stars as swimmer Diana Nyad, and the film is based on her autobiography “Find a Way.” Jodie Foster and Rhys Ifans also star in the film, which documents Nyad’s career as a professional swimmer in her ’20s turned sports journalist in her ’30s who would return to the waters 30 years later. Our critic praised Benning, writing, “Bening perfectly conveys Nyad’s passion and makes her swims believable.” 
Release Date: In select theaters, October 20, on Netflix, November 3.

Five Nights at Freddy’s”
Based on the top-rated horror video game series by Scott Cawthon, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is adapted by Cawthon and director Emma Tammi. This Blumhouse production looks to capture the game’s energy that has created such a unified, passionate fan base, with a story about four animatronic mascots who can move and kill anyone who enters the family entertainment center they reside in — as long as it’s after midnight. Josh Hutcherson stars. 
Release Date: In theaters October 27 via Universal Pictures.

The Holdovers
Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti reunite for the first time since the award-winning “Sideways” for the comedy/drama “The Holdovers” where Giamatti plays a professor who offers to stay on campus during the holidays to babysit a handful of students who don’t have anywhere else to go. Written by David Hemingson, the film also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Our critic who saw the film at Telluride called it, “prestige film comfort food.” 
Release Date: In limited theaters October 27 via Focus Features.

Freelance
Alison Brie and John Cena team up for the action comedy “Freelance” directed by Pierre Morel. Cena plays a security guard for Brie’s journalist, who has been tasked with interviewing a dangerous leader. Things go awry, and all three are forced to escape in order to survive. Juan Pablo Raba, Alice Eve, Martin Csokas, and Christian Slater star in the feature writing debut from screenwriter Jacob Lentz.
Release Date: October 27 in theaters via Relativity Media.
