’77 Blackout’: Mahershala Ali & Tom Hardy To Star In Cary Fukunaga’s Crime Thriller

It’s been three years since Cary Fukunaga’s most recent film, the 007 feature, “No Time to Die.” Since then, it’s been a bit rough for the filmmaker. He was at the center of sexual misconduct allegations from women in Hollywood. While no legal action was taken, it did mean that when “Masters of the Air” was released, the Apple TV+ war series he directed some episodes of, Fukunaga was not part of the marketing. Many have been curious to see when the director would be back in the limelight. Well, not only does Fukunaga have a new film in the works, titled “77 Blackout,” but he has two of the biggest stars on the planet starring.

According to Deadline, Tom Hardy and Mahershala Ali are set to star in Cary Fukunaga’s new film, “77 Blackout.” The film, written by Frank John Hughes and Fukunaga, tells the story of renegade police officers who decide to rob three major criminal organizations–the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob–during a major city-wide blackout. As you might suspect, the blackout causes quite a few issues for the cops.

Before “No Time to Die” and “Masters of the Air,” Fukunaga was best known for directing the award-winning first season of “True Detective,” as well as the film, “Beasts of No Nation.” He also directed the Netflix series, “Maniac.”

Ali and Hardy are two of the biggest names in the industry right now. Hardy will next be seen in the acclaimed biker drama, “The Bikeriders.” Ali, on the other hand, was most recently seen in the massively popular Netflix film, “Leave the World Behind,” as well as the animated sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

No release date for “77 Blackout” has been announced. The film is going to take part in the Cannes film market to help find a studio. With these people involved, it’s not going to be difficult to find distribution, probably.
