This summer, we’ll see Paul Walter Hauser (“Richard Jewel”) in Marvel‘s “Fantastic Four” reboot and has now attached himself to a new comedy that will see the feature directorial debut of Tony Award-winner Brian Swibel (who has strong ties with the absurdist and improv comedy community) with “The Very Best People.”
News on the project heading to the Cannes Film Market hails from Deadline, who add that the rest of the cast will consist of Lili Reinhart (“Riverdale”), Tim Roth (“The Hateful Eight”), Jake Lacy (“Carol”), Jai Courtney (“Dangerous Animals”), and Kerry Bishé (“Halt & Catch Fire”).
Filming on “The Very Best People” is set to begin on May 22 in New York City, but plot details aren’t known. However, it has a script penned by Craig Cox (“Blades of Glory”), Swibel, and John Lavelle.
Some of Swibel’s Broadway efforts include “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” “An American In Paris,” Nick Kroll and John Mulaney‘s revival of their shock-value Comedy Central characters in “Oh, Hello On Broadway,” Will Farrell‘s political satire “You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush,” “Beetlejuice,” “King Kong,” “Amelie,” and “Xanadu.”
Jonathan Kier and Matt Brodlie’s Upgrade will handle buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market, with UTA Independent Film Group tackling the North American rights.
The producing team assembled for “The Very Best People” includes Brent Emery, Justin Klosky, Alex Peace-Power, Tara Smith, Bita Khorrami, veteran producer and casting director Bonnie Timmermann, along with Hauser, Reinhart, Dan Reardon, and Lisa Wolofsky.
Given Swibel’s working relationships with comedians, we shouldn’t be all that surprised if the pic ends up adding some known ones in smaller supporting roles or cameos, but that is simply our assumption.
