Forgive us for yet another Christopher Nolan-related post, but with “Inception” out in a couple of weeks, and with the director now doing the press rounds for the film, bit and pieces of info are going to start arriving at a rapid pace. One film everyone will be asking him about is the upcoming “Batman 3,” but if you think he’s already begun work on that film, guess again.
Speaking with the NY Times, Nolan reveals that the “gears are firmly jammed up with [‘Inception’]” and even though the film is slated for July 20, 2012 release, he is not under any pressure from Warner Bros. to start getting things in motion. “I wouldn’t let them put out an impractical date. Put it that way,” he said.
But even if Nolan is currently focused on the movie at hand, his brother and frequent collaborator Jonathan Nolan has been busy. He says, “I’m also very fortunate I have a brother [Jonathan Nolan] I work with. He’s an incredible asset and has been for many years.” And he’s been at for a while it seems, with Nolan revealing, “He’s been working on a script for a long time. And working very hard. So he tells me.”
Unlike most directors in Hollywood, Nolan is in the unique and coveted position where his success has allowed him independence in how he approaches his films, yet with access to the resources of a big studio. “…he’s a one-project-at-a-time person,” said Jeff Robinov President of Warner Brothers motion picture group. “He’s not under any contract to us, never mind an exclusive one.” That being said, given the success Warner Bros. has had with Nolan and with the trust and latitude the studio has placed in the director, it’s clear the two sides have a very happy, symbiotic relationship so don’t expect it to end any time soon.
There’s obviously no word yet on when Nolan will actively begin work on “Batman 3” but with the film rumored to start shooting in March of next year, we would imagine that he will dive in the world of Gotham sometime this fall.
