It’s already been pointed out that the poster for filmmaker Ari Aster’s upcoming Western “Eddington” is stellar. An ominous, striking image of a buffalo tumbling off the cliff of a mountain with the clever yet confounding tagline “Hindsight Is 2020.” With further details revealed about the movie’s plot in the past couple of weeks, a bizarre teaser released last month, and an upcoming premiere at Cannes only days away, “Eddington” only gets more alluring. Characterized as a sort of dark comedy, the movie follows the effects of social media on a Covid pandemic-ridden New Mexico town called Eddington, its effects on the local citizens, and the chaos and violence that ensues.
Details like these—combined with an impressive cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler—make this a must-see for fans of the filmmaker, who has a proven track record with previous movies such as “Beau Is Afraid,” “Hereditary,” and “Midsommar.” Additionally, “Eddington” is being called a “contemporary Western.” A unique label that should pique the curiosity of filmgoers.
