Meryl Streep Throws Golden Globes A Bone Accepting 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced this morning that the one and only Meryl Streep will receive the organization’s lifetime achievement honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, at the 74th Golden Globes this January.

Let’s be frank, though: She was always going to be there, anyway.

Streep has earned a remarkable 29 Golden Globe nominations (not a typo) and eight statues, her most recent for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for “The Iron Lady” in 2012. Her last nomination came in 2015 in the Supporting Actress category for “Into The Woods,” but many feel it’s a given that her work in “Florence Foster Jenkins” will land her a nod for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy, which would be her 30th.

In a statement from the HFPA, President Lorenzo Soria stated, “It’s no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award. Meryl’s enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years, and she will continue to do so for generations to come. She has always taken roles with strong female leads, creating art by showing vulnerability and portraying truth on the big screen. Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage. For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her.”

Recent recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award include George Clooney, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, who was honored this past January. Notably, Streep joins Foster as the only women to receive the award since Barbra Streisand in 2000.

The 74th Golden Globes will be handed out on Jan. 8, 2017 and aired live on NBC.
