From the moment you finished watching “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” you had to expect that the folks over at Screen Junkies would make an entertaining Honest Trailer about the film. And guess what, you’re right. The latest Honest Trailer is at once a scathing look at the unnecessary prequel and a funny recap of everything that led up to what essentially turned out to be an average space adventure.
The trailer starts out pointing out what “Star Wars” fans realized in the first minutes of ‘Solo’ — the film is less about the character of Han and more about the literal things that make up his character. As the Epic Voice Guy says, “…in a film that is less a Han Solo character study and more of an origin story for all of Han Solo’s accessories…”
The biggest worry that fans had before the film’s premiere was that ‘Solo’ would be more of a checklist of how the things that made Han Solo the character we know and love came about. How did he get the Millenium Falcon? How did he get his blaster? Where did he learn his “I Know” catchphrase? And what happened during the Kessel Run? We get answers to all of that…to the detriment of the actual plot and overall film.
Perhaps most polarizing of all, we do find out where he literally got his name, Han Solo. This is despite the assurance from Kathleen Kennedy that the film would not change the character’s name, but then go ahead and change his name. Ugh.
In addition to the obvious low-hanging fruit, the trailer also points out the fact that Han is clearly the least interesting character in his own movie, and despite all the drama surrounding the droid in the film, the most-wasted new addition to the “Star Wars” universe was Thandie Newton’s Val (which ‘Solo’ screenwriter Jon Kasdan agrees).
Other victims of the new Honest Trailer are cinematographer Bradford Young, whose color palette for the film is described as a mixture of blues, browns, olive, and “Taco Bell Orange,” and Paul Bettany, who plays a character that really no one can remember his name.
So yeah, one of the more highly-anticipated Honest Trailers has arrived. Commence the furious debate!
