Jon Watts Describes The Ambition Of ‘No Way Home’ As ‘Spider-Man: Endgame’

OK, while it’s remained a mystery for a long time, with lots of secrets still to be revealed, the trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did shed quite a bit of detail on the basic plot of the Sony/Marvel movie. Following the events of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” his secret identity having been revealed by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) has been framed for Mysterio’s death and its playing havoc with his personal life.

Trying to escape the attention at school, in the press, in his everyday life, Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks him to cast a magical spell so the whole world won’t remember what happened and no one will know his secret identity. Strange agrees to cast the spell (which seems suspect as many pundits have agreed), but something eventually goes wrong. What ends up happening is some rip in the fabric of the multiverse, and what ensues is the return of Spider-Man villains from another timeline and previous Spider-Man films. Alfred Molina returns as Doctor Octopus from the Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” films, Jamie Foxx returns as Electro from the Andrew Garfield iteration of “Spider-Man,” and it seems like Willem Dafoe is also returning as the Green Goblin from the Raimi film as briefly teased in the ‘Now Way Home’ trailer.

All of these characters, and many more rumored, point to some big event film. And in the recent issue of Empire, which has revealed new photos from “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the movie’s director Jon Watts has confirmed the vast ambition of the movie. How big is the film? “It’s ‘Spider-Man: Endgame,’”  Watts said with a laugh.

“When I was first pitched the idea, I was like, ‘Wow, that would be awesome if we could pull it off,’” Tom Holland said of the idea of bringing back famous former foes. “‘But there’s just no way it’s going to work. You’re just not going to be able to get everyone to do what they need to do. It’s just not going to happen.’ But it did happen. And it’s crazy.”

The ‘Endgame’ comment seems to hint at the size of the film and maybe teases even more of the surprises. It’s long been rumored that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be reprising their roles as the Spider-Men from their timelines (all of them have denied the talk so far). It’s also been rumored that Emma Stone would return as Gwen Stacy, and Kirsten Dunst would appear as Mary Jane Watson. Deeper rumors/speculation point to the re-introduction of Charlie Cox as Daredevil from the Netflix series and more previous Spider-Man movie villains like Rhys Ifans‘ Lizard, but so far, none of it has been confirmed beyond internet gossip.
