It’s been nearly four years since Todd Haynes released a new narrative feature film. Thankfully, that’s changing later this year with the release of his new film, “May December.”

And with a Cannes debut on the horizon for Todd Haynes’ “May December,” Variety has just published a first-look photo of the new film which stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. In the film, Portman plays an actress who embeds herself in the home of a married couple, who became infamous due to their extreme age gap. Moore plays the older woman in the couple, who married a much younger man but has been happily together for 20 years. Joining Moore and Portman in the cast are Charles Melton, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, and Gabriel Chung

As mentioned, “May December” marks a reunion for Haynes and Moore, who previously worked together on the Oscar-nominated film, “Far From Heaven,” as well as “Wonderstruck” in 2017. The former earned four Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actress nom for Moore. Needless to say, folks are really interested in seeing if the new film will spark the same sort of reaction.

Despite being one of the most acclaimed filmmakers working today, thanks to the aforementioned “Far from Heaven,” as well as films such as “Carol,” “Velvet Goldmine,” and “I’m Not There,” Haynes hasn’t really had a hit film in a number of years. His most recent feature, a documentary about The Velvet Underground, was well-received but not a massive hit. Before that, there were “Wonderstruck” and “Dark Waters,” both of which received rather mixed reviews. That said, there is quite a bit of buzz surrounding “May December,” with Moore and Portman leading the way and a flashy Cannes debut lined up.

A theatrical release has yet to be announced for “May December,” as the film will be courting distribution partners while at Cannes. The first-look photo is below:
