Got a Tip?

Duncan Jones’ ‘Source Code’ Recruits Vera Farmiga And Michelle Monaghan

Damn, nice cast. Actresses Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan have joined the cast of Duncan Jones’ upcoming sci-fi thriller “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, according to THR.

The additions are quite the coup for Jones, who essentially only had one star, Sam Rockwell, for his last picture, “Moon.” Though that directorial debut — a startlingly good first effort — also had Kevin Spacey in a key voice role.

“Source Code” centers on a soldier (Gyllenhaal) who is part of an experimental government program investigating a terrorist incident. He finds himself in the body of an unknown commuter living and reliving a harrowing train bombing until he can find who is responsible for the attack. Farmiga will play a hands-on communications officer assisting Gyllenhaal in his time travels, while Monaghan plays Christina, a woman on the train with whom the soldier is involved romantically.

We recently reviewed the film’s script and felt that it could potentially be the best sci-fi film in years, if executed well. Much of the intrigue in the script, we felt, didn’t come from the soldier’s detective work, but rather in his exploration of the program itself and why he is chosen for it.

Shooting is slated to begin this March, which means we could see it by year’s end, but a 2011 release is more likely.

And man, if you’re an up-and-coming filmmaker, you’ve got to be a little envious about Jones fortune. But good on ’em. We’ll be very curious to see how this one pans out and surely it’s going to be a highly anticipated project for filmgoers of many different stripes (geeks and the thinking-nerd cinephile alike).
