A 'Star Wars' Fan Recreates The 'Revenge Of The Sith' Saber Duel In The Animation Style Of 'Clone Wars'

Well, you gotta imagine, like the guy who did Deepfake Of Luke Skywalker and did it better than Lucasfilm (and then got hired for a job), the creator of this new “Star Wars” animated video is likely getting a call from Lucasfilm Animation and or Dave Filoni himself.

So the aptly titled Star Wars YouTube channel Hello There has created a very inventive adaptation. Everyone knows the epic final lightsaber duel in “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, right? Well, Hello There has recreated the entire thing but done it in the animation style of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

This is significant for several reasons, besides being a rather incredible and impressive feat. George Lucas’ prequels are obviously controversial, loved by some, reviled by others, and the abuse is what most people believe led Lucas to sell Lucasfilm to Disney in 2014—he’d had enough (and hey, he’s suggested the same in subsequent interviews, so this isn’t just speculation).

But “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which was primarily led by Lucas and his protégé Dave Filoni—who is now in a big creative exec role at Lucasfilm, co-created “The Mandalorian,” Ahsoka” and is expected to direct his own “Star Wars” film next—has really done wonders to repair the prequels reputations.

‘The Clone Wars’ was conceived of by George Lucas to fill in the gaps in stories between “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and ‘Revenge Of The Sith,’ there is, after all, a three-year break between those stories and Anakin and Obi-Wan went on many adventures and fought many battles. More importantly, ‘The Clone Wars’ was able to pave a much more emotionally convincing and believable path for Anakin’s turn to the dark side, using seven seasons of animated TV to sew seeds, foreshadow retroactively, and just credibly make the case for Anakin as much more arrogant, broken and reckless Jedi on the path to disaster.

It’s a path that no one really saw coming—which further pushed the narrative idea so crucial to the prequels of the Jedi being arrogant and unaware of their blindspots—other than Ashoka Tano, in retrospect, a perfectly created character for the series (Tano was Anakin’s padawan and when she was framed and eventually left the Jedi Order, he exit was another huge crushing blow in Anakin’s story that made him feel further lost and abandoned).

Of course, ‘The Clone Wars’ ends in season seven and then walks its way up to the events of ‘Revenge Of The Sith’ which was told in live-action, so the way this all fittingly connects, and we finally get to see ‘Sith’ moments in animation is pretty fitting (and in another level of connectivity, Dave Filoni inserted moments of ‘The Clone Wars’ into live-action for the first time in the “Ashoka” series starring Rosario Dawson).

This is a long way of saying the team of designers behind Hello There are (presumably, they are a team) likely to receive a call from Lucasfilm soon. And don’t be surprised if it’s not a cease-and-desist conversation, either. Watch the most impressive 15-minute scene below.
