‘Breakthrough’: Darren Aronofsky Eyed To Direct Dwayne Johnson In A24’s California Guru Thriller

Last month, we learned about a reunion between A24 and actor/producer Dwayne Johnson on the Breakthrough project that would see Johnson playing a charismatic but potentially dangerous guru in a new thriller. We now have an update concerning a potential director.

There is word from Deadline that Darren Aronofsky is now circling “Breakthrough,” with the filmmaker reportedly in early talks to helm the thriller set in Southern California during the early 2000s.

This would make for quite the collaboration as A24 previously worked with Johnson on the upcoming Benny Safdie-directed mixed martial arts biopic “The Smashing Machine,” Aronofsky teamed with the studio on his Oscar-winning drama “The Whale.”

Here is the outlet’s synopsis for “Breakthrough”:

“Set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, the story follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness.”

Aronofsky has his 1990s-set peroid pic Caught Stealing” starring Austin Butler releasing this August by Sony Pictures, and has been linked as a potential canddiate to tackle a “Cujo” remake at Netflix, however, with “Breakthrough” possibly next, we don’t know if that Stephen King adaptation is going to stick.

If Aronofsky is secured as the film’s director and signs on, the next big step would be finding the other key actor to play the “alienated young man” part at the center of the story alongside the supporting cast. We should likely see plenty of high-profile actors looking to work on a project with such great potential, like “Breakthrough.”

It’s hard not to be excited by this pairing. Hopefully, it all comes together, and we have to commend Johnson for attempting to pursue more complex movie roles.
