This is it, people. Brace yourself for the official beginning of the end for the Golden Age of TV. Admittedly, we had a good run. There was “Breaking Bad,” “Game of Thrones,” and even “Atlanta,” all showing viewers that television wasn’t just a second-rate medium, filled with gimmicks and lame acting. But now, that’s all coming to an end thanks to one name — “ALF.”
That’s right, apparently Hollywood has officially run out of good ideas for television series and instead, has decided the best route moving forward is with a reboot of “ALF.” TV Line is reporting that Warner Bros. has begun development on a reboot of the “classic” sitcom. The series, which became popular in the late-‘80s, followed an Alien Life Form (thus the title) that landed on Earth and became a fixture in a middle-class household. Oh yeah, and he always wanted to eat cats or something.
During “ALF’s” initial run, the main character became a bit of a pop culture icon. He’s been referenced in numerous other TV series and films. And the puppet/alien also became a pitchman, appearing in commercials for DirecTV and Radio Shack. Now, WBTV is on the search for a writer to take the reins of the latest TV reboot/revival.
The real question that remains is “Why?” Has there been an outcry for “ALF”-related content? Or just maybe, studios have reached the proverbial bottom of the barrel, as far as ‘80s/’90s content goes, and are just running out of existing ideas to bring back to the mainstream. We’re going to bet on the latter.
The report goes on to say its unclear whether series co-creator, puppeteer, and ALF voice-actor Paul Fusco will be back for this version of the series. However, if they’re going to bring back the character, they better at least get the voice right.
No word on a release date. So, enjoy quality TV while you can. Because if this goes to series, the end is most definitely near.
