Just by the very nature of the story, “Altered Carbon” has the benefit of being able to recast the series’ lead every season if needed. And while Joel Kinnaman played the role of Takeshi Kovacs in Season 1, it appears that Anthony Mackie is taking over for Season 2.

As seen in the new trailer for the upcoming season of “Altered Carbon,” the Marvel Studios actor has taken over as Kovacs, a soldier in the future that is on a quest to find his lost love. While “Altered Carbon” is not a typical anthology series, per se, the show does find itself in the position of being able to begin Season 2 decades after the end of the first, allowing for a new cast of characters, while still continuing the story that kicked off in the last batch of episodes.
Joining Mackie in the cast are Renée Elise Goldsberry, Lela Loren, Simone Missick, Chris Conner, Dina Shihabi, Torben Liebrecht, Will Yun Lee, and James Saito. The series comes from showrunner Alison Schapker, who is known for her writing work on other shows such as “The Flash,” “Alias,” “Fringe,” and “Almost Human.”
The second season of “Altered Carbon” arrives on Netflix on February 27.
Here’s the synopsis:
In Altered Carbon, society is transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent.
Season Two begins 30 years after the epic conclusion of Season One, and finds Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie), the lone surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors, continuing his centuries old quest to find his lost love Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). After decades of planet-hopping and searching the galaxy, Kovacs is recruited back to his home planet of Harlan’s World with the promise of finding Quell.
