Anne Hathaway To Star In Robert Zemeckis' Remake Of 'The Witches'

Coming off the low that was his latest film “Welcome to Marwen,” Robert Zemeckis is planning his comeback with the new movie “The Witches,” and pulling some big names for it too. A remake of the 1990 cult classic starring Anjelica Huston, the new film will now have Anne Hathaway playing the main villainous role.

The famed director responsible for classics like the “Back to the Future” trilogy and “Forrest Gump” hit a bit of a rough patch with the most recent ‘Marwen,’ which came out over Christmas. With opening weekend box office for ‘Marwen’ marking an all-time low in Zemeckis’ career, it’s about time he starts getting back on track with the family movies he is so acclaimed for.

With Zemeckis’ talent for special effects and modern-day technology, expectations are high for the remake of “The Witches,” originally based on Roald Dahl’s famed novel. The film follows the story of a young boy and his grandmother going against a nasty coven of children-eating witches after they turn the boy into a mouse. It’s still in the early stages of planning, but with the news of Hathaway being added to the cast, we can’t help but be excited.

Plus, who wouldn’t want to see Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch in this remake? She has been stealing our hearts and making us swoon since her very first film as the teen titular princess in 2001’s “Princess Diaries.” I think that we can all agree that she has since rightfully become a queen in cinema, with awards under her belt and fresh off the hit remake “Ocean’s 8.” With Variety confirming her role in the Zemeckis film, we might see a side of her we haven’t before. Hathaway has been a princess and a white queen, a 19th century singing factory worker and even Catwoman, yet we’ve never really seen her go full villain. Our guess is, she’ll kill it like all the rest of her roles.
